Southern Ocean Lodge offers guests a complete and personal Kangaroo Island experience. A signature itinerary of guided island excursions is designed daily and included in the tariff, allowing guests to encounter abundant wildlife around the ‘zoo without fences’ and discover the island’s unique natural attractions. Eucalyptus oil was Australia’s first overseas export and is now one of Kangaroo Island’s most important industries. Emu Ridge is the only remaining commercial eucalyptus oil distillery in South Australia and proudly shares the heritage of the local product – along with sales of the cure-all oil – at its unique cellar door.
Lovers of oysters – and snapping fresh seafood – will be keen to stop in at The Oyster Farm Shop at American River in the island’s west. A unique marine farm-gate experience, oysters are shucked fresh daily from the leases from April to January. Visitors can buy oysters by the sackful, or sample freshly shucked in the café.
Resembling a contemporary shed, the Kangaroo Island Brewery is located along the Cygnet River gourmet trail. Pouring some tasty drops including a ginger wheat ale and Sheoak Stout, the beer, like the brewhouse, is built by hand. Pull up a pew and sample a few at the bar.
Emu Bay Lavender farm runs over 51 acres of land and is owned by a fifth-generation Kangaroo Island family, with mother-and-daughter Sophia and Eliza continuing the farming tradition together. Visitors walk through purple scented fields to the rustic café which sells a range of products made onsite. The lavender ice cream is a must-try!
With magnificent views across the vineyard and the calm waters of the bay, the Bay of Shoals winery invites a tasting of award-winning wines, a quick drive from Kingscote. The Bay of Shoals cool, crisp Riesling is a popular choice in the bar at Southern Ocean Lodge.
