The KI Wilderness Trail is a five-day, 61km trail developed by National Parks South Australia and is on track to be one of Australia’s great walks, coursing through the hinterland of the natural heritage sanctuary created in the planning of Southern Ocean Lodge. Information and tips

  • Times indicated for bush walk and bike trails are approximate only and may vary dependant on fitness levels – also allow time for sightseeing and taking photos.
  • Please advise Reception when leaving the property and also upon return to the lodge.
  • Be sure to carry plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and first aid kid and wear appropriate clothing on walks, ie hat, comfortable walking shoes, warm top and rain jacket.
  • Consider the weather conditions and consult with the lodge team as needed – activities are undertaken at own risk.
  • See the lodge team for advice on where to ride the mountain bikes. Helmets are compulsory.
  • For a dip in the Southern Ocean, head down to Hanson Bay Beach.
  • Distance Conversion: 1 kilometre = 0.62 miles

4. Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery

Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery

Eucalyptus oil was Australia’s first overseas export and is now one of Kangaroo Island’s most important  industries. Emu Ridge is the only remaining commercial eucalyptus oil distillery in South Australia and proudly shares the heritage of the local product – along with sales of the cure-all oil – at its unique cellar door.

5. The Oyster Shop

Lovers of oysters – and snapping fresh seafood – will be keen to stop in at The Oyster Farm Shop at American River in the island’s west. A unique marine farm-gate experience, oysters are shucked fresh daily from the leases from April to January. Visitors can buy oysters by the sackful, or sample freshly shucked in the café.

6. Kangaroo Island Brewery

Resembling a contemporary shed, the Kangaroo Island Brewery is located along the Cygnet River gourmet trail. Pouring some tasty drops including a ginger wheat ale and Sheoak Stout, the beer, like the brewhouse, is built by hand. Pull up a pew and sample a few at the bar.

7. Emu Bay Lavender

Emu Bay Lavender farm runs over 51 acres of land and is owned by a fifth-generation Kangaroo Island family, with mother-and-daughter Sophia and Eliza continuing the farming tradition together. Visitors walk through purple scented fields to the rustic café which sells a range of products made onsite. The lavender ice cream is a must-try!

8. Bay of Shoals

With magnificent views across the vineyard and the calm waters of the bay, the Bay of Shoals winery invites a tasting of award-winning wines, a quick drive from Kingscote. The Bay of Shoals cool, crisp Riesling is a popular choice in the bar at Southern Ocean Lodge.
