Coastal glamour
With clever architectural design, organic finishes and signature curved lines making the most of the dramatic ocean-front location, Southern Ocean Lodge blends effortlessly with the rugged beauty of Kangaroo Island. Floor-to-ceiling windows extend panoramic views of white-sanded beaches and rolling wilderness, with the Southern Ocean waiting below.
Great Room
The expansive Great Room lies at the helm of the lodge and is the hub of all activity, from lounging with a book with panoramic views of the Southern Ocean to sharing a drink at the open bar and planning the next day’s adventures. Outside, a wet-edge pool lines the lodge terrace inviting a plunge into the landscape.
Restaurant
A sweeping panorama of ocean provides a dramatic backdrop for savouring world-class contemporary cuisine with a proudly local provenance. A convivial open bar and walk-in cellar offer help-yourself premium beverages, including a hand-picked collection of fine local wines representing some of the best-known regions in South Australia.
Southern Spa
Overlooking rolling bushland, the Southern Spa offers three treatment rooms, a sauna and gymnasium while outside on the terrace hot and cold plunge pools are perfect for soaking in the moment. A menu of signature treatments features the Australian-made alkeme spa care range alongside Kangaroo Island’s own natural beauty botanicals.
Our story
Envisioned by life and business partners James and Hayley Baillie, Southern Ocean Lodge was designed by Kangaroo Island-born architect Max Pritchard, opening in 2008 to instant and ongoing global acclaim. Following the lodge’s destruction in the summer bushfires of 2020, Baillie Lodges and KSL Capital Partners immediately committed to the rebuild of its flagship property, delivering on the promise in 2023.
The vision
Eager to ‘do even better’ the second time around, the Baillies once again joined forces with Max and his design partner Andrew Gunner to steer the design of the new-look lodge. Southern Ocean Lodge complements Capella Lodge, Longitude 131°, Silky Oaks Lodge and The Louise in a premium experience of Australia’s most extraordinary destinations and Huka Lodge, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, Tierra Atacama and Tierra Patagonia in international waters.

Environment
A 20-metre wilderness buffer is maintained around the lodge and the area has been cleverly planted with fire-retardant native succulents and Kangaroo Island’s own endemic juniper. The bushland and coastal wilderness that surrounds Southern Ocean Lodge is protected to safeguard it for its wildlife residents and for future generations.
Water
Investment in a large reverse osmosis system sees the use of solar power to convert bore water to fresh water and storage capacity is now 5.8 million litres of potable water. All rainwater is stored and harvesting produces some 12000L of drinkable rainwater from every millimetre that falls on the site.
Energy
Environmental sustainability is core to the design of Southern Ocean Lodge with significant hybrid solar and battery infrastructure allowing the lodge to generate its own power and continue to run off grid in its remote location on Kangaroo Island’s southwestern coast. A computerised building management system minimises usage.
Community
The lodge actively engages with the island community, choosing to almost exclusively work with local growers and producers. Collaboration with a community network of small businesses provides a veritable boost to the regional economy and creates a homegrown identity for Southern Ocean Lodge.
