The cool season is an ideal time to visit the nation’s third largest island, fondly referred to as Australia’s Galapagos. The abundant native wildlife is at its most active and the icy blue Southern Ocean performs its wild symphony, best viewed from the warm comforts of the Great Room. Here, guests will sip fine Henschke wines by the open fire, including the release of the 2021 Single Vineyard Collection, featuring 2021 Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone single-vineyard shiraz from the Eden Valley, as well as a curated selection of museum wines from the Henschke family cellar.
Henschke is one of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries, with a legacy spanning over 150 years in the Barossa’s Eden Valley. Established in 1868, Henschke has seen six generations of family grape growing and winemaking tradition in the Eden Valley, Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills.
Fifth-generation winemakers Stephen and Prue Henschke are recognised around the world for their exceptional quality wines, innovation and sustainability in the vineyard. Stephen and Prue’s adult children and future custodians of the Henschke story are readying to offer their own steer on the business and viticulture, but not quite yet!
Guests on the Henschke by the Sea wine weekend will have a chance to sample the Henschke wines with special vintages shared exclusively for the event, and spend time with Stephen and Prue, learning a little about the joys and challenges of world-renowned winegrowing in South Australia.
Relaxed lunches and decadent dinners feature exclusively local ingredients sourced direct from South Australia’s community of growers and producers, with special menus designed to pair with the range of Henschke wines brought to Southern Ocean Lodge for the event, and several that are found in the help-yourself wine cellar year-round.
Highlights on the weekend menus include American River oysters, Scott Wilson’s locally farmed marron, Parndarna High School baby barramundi, Kangaroo Island lamb shoulder and farmer John Kersley’s Kangaroo Island’s partridge.
Beyond the table, guided adventures invite guests to immerse themselves in the wild beauty of Kangaroo Island. Included are excursions to the Flinders Chase National Park to visit a long-nosed fur seal colony and the Remarkable Rocks, and to the nation’s third largest colony of endangered Sea Lions at the Seal Bay Conservation Park.
A weekend of rare wines, unforgettable landscapes, and meaningful connection awaits.
