It’s hard to imagine a more sympathetic tribute to the wild beauty of Kangaroo Island than Southern Ocean Lodge. Floor-to-ceiling windows extend panoramic views of white-sanded beaches and rolling wilderness, with the ocean pounding below.
Great Room
The expansive Great Room lies at the helm of the lodge, and is the hub of all activity, from lounging with a book and panoramic views of the Southern Ocean to sharing a drink at the open bar and planning the next day’s adventures.
Restaurant
A sweeping panorama of ocean provides a dramatic backdrop for savouring world-class contemporary cuisine with a proudly local provenance. A convivial open bar and walk-in cellar offer help-yourself premium South Australian beverages.
Southern Spa
The satellite Southern Spa is reached via a coastal boardwalk, set above the native mallee. A menu of signature spa treatments features the Australian-made Li’Tya spa care range and Aboriginal massage techniques.
Our story
The flagship of the Baillie Lodges portfolio, Southern Ocean Lodge opened in 2008 to instant and ongoing global acclaim and quickly assumed a dedicated following of guests seeking extraordinary accommodation, world-class dining, unforgettable experiences and first-name service.
The vision
Envisioned by life and business partners James and Hayley Baillie, Southern Ocean Lodge was designed by Kangaroo Island-born architect Max Pritchard. The lodge’s clever, contemporary design welcomes the outside in. From a distance it resembles the waves of the ocean or layers of the limestone cliffs.

Southern Ocean Lodge represents a new breed of luxury accommodation offering a journey within the destination and where clever architectural design, premium appointments, locally commissioned artworks and custom furnishings create a timeless appeal.

Flora
99% of the land cleared in the construction of Southern Ocean Lodge is protected to guarantee its pristine state for future generations. Native vegetation clearing at Southern Ocean Lodge was minimised by using existing fire-trails or tracks.
Fauna
The lodge is situated among national parks and conservation sanctuaries, and is a mecca for native wildlife. Boardwalks and walking tracks minimise the potential ‘edge effect’ of guest movements, and ensure the native flora continues to thrive.
Energy
Both the aspect and architectural design of the lodge were planned to maximise benefits of the lodge’s location and the destination’s natural weather patterns. Low-energy flow-through ventilation and double glazing offer natural acclimatisation in every season.
Water
Water is harvested from all roof surfaces at Southern Ocean Lodge and stored in tanks with a total capacity in excess of 1.5 million litres. A key aim is to have the property rainwater self-sufficient nine out of every ten years.
Our people
The Southern Ocean Lodge team is small and close-knit, attracting hospitality professionals from Australia and around the world. Renowned for their intuitive first-name service style, our people are what keep our friends returning for more.
Lodge managers
Life partners John Hird and Alison Heath have been running the show since 2012, steering daily operations with the sole aim of delivering the best luxury lodge experience in Australia. Many happy guests and a mantle-piece full of travel awards attest the wonderful job they do.
Assistant managers
South Africa-born, Lucky Legong brings such warmth and zeal to her role that she creates an atmosphere of joy to all those around her. Well-liked by guests and a familiar face at all three Baillie Lodges properties, Sally Sowden combines a zen-like calm with a passion for the details.
Executive chefs
Dann Rowell and Tom Saliba together bring a passion for fresh seasonal produce and good, honest food as well as a drive to work with local producers to the daily-changing menu, an approach that is essential to the Baillie Lodges dining experience.
There is so much to like!
