Southern Ocean Lodge’s commitment to community is integral to our ethos and spans a wide range of education, conservation, arts, social and health-related charities and initiatives throughout Australia.
Southern Ocean Lodge is a long-time sponsor of the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the charities’ mission to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. In August, Chef Asher Blackford joined the glitterati of local chefs to create and plate a show-stopping menu for 500 guests at the Adelaide Five Chefs Dinner. Through the generous donations of supporters, the evening raised vital funds for the charity to deliver hospital programs in South Australia for five months and grant twelve Starlight Wishes!
At Kangaroo Island Community Education’s Parndana Campus, school students raise barramundi as part of the aquaculture program, which are then sold to the lodge along with a range of hydroponic herbs. Established in 2004, the school’s Rural Production facility incorporates aquaculture, agriculture and horticulture. The aquaculture project has become a commercially successful producer of sustainable barramundi and fresh hydroponic herbs over the course of its development. Southern Ocean Lodge is the school’s largest customer and the relationship between the school and the lodge has flourished as everyone embraces the possibilities on offer to both parties.
Southern Ocean Lodge recently launched a work experience scholarship for local high school students which includes a week’s paid employment at the lodge. The new program offers experience across Southern Ocean Lodge’s key operational departments including food and beverage, front office, housekeeping, kitchen, outdoor experiences and maintenance. Two impressive applicants will join the team during the next school holidays with accommodation offered in the onsite staff village to provide a real experience of being a lodge staff member.
